Florence Price's "Ethiopia's Shadow in America" portrays aspects of the life of slaves in the US. William Grant Still's "Afro-American Symphony" was the first symphonic work by a black composer to be performed by a major American orchestra when it was premiered in 1931.

The second half features two well-known works that include strong jazz influences: Gerge Gershwin's famous "An American in Paris", which includes everything from jazz bar-style brass to car horns in the percussion section, and Dmitri Shostakovich's "Suite for Variety Orchestra", which is sometimes (incorrectly) known as one of his jazz suites.
