George Morton – Conductor
Hallam Sinfonia returns with regular guest conductor George Morton, giving a programme of music from the early 20th Century – related in some way to the origins of, or inspired by, early jazz music.
Programme
Florence Price
Ethiopia's Shadow in America
William Grant Still
Symphony no.1 "Afro-American"
George Gershwin
An American in Paris
Dmitri Shostakovich
Suite for Variety Orchestra
Florence Price's "Ethiopia's Shadow in America" portrays aspects of the life of slaves in the US. William Grant Still's "Afro-American Symphony" was the first symphonic work by a black composer to be performed by a major American orchestra when it was premiered in 1931.
The second half features two well-known works that include strong jazz influences: Gerge Gershwin's famous "An American in Paris", which includes everything from jazz bar-style brass to car horns in the percussion section, and Dmitri Shostakovich's "Suite for Variety Orchestra", which is sometimes (incorrectly) known as one of his jazz suites.
