About the event
In October 1973, Hallam Sinfonia gave its first ever concert. Now, 50 years on, we celebrate half a century of wonderful music making in our first concert with Jon Malaxetxebarria as our Musical Director.
The concert kicks off with a new work - a short fanfare ("Shining Dawn") written for the occasion by local composer (and Hallam Sinfonia cellist) Benjamin Jackson. Following this will be one of the works played at the very first Hallam Sinfonia concert - Beethoven's first symphony, an energetic and underrated work from his Classical period.
In the second half will be Brahms's majestic 4th symphony. We had been intending to perform this - with Jon Malaxetxebarria as conductor - in March 2020, before the pandemic intervened, so this is an appropriate way to celebrate Jon's debut as Musical Director with us.
