Our Musical Director Jon Malaxetxebarria tells us why he's excited about our forthcoming Dance! concert, in particular invoking his Spanish heritage!
Get ready for a night of electrifying rhythms and cultural fusion! I’m thrilled to lead an exhilarating program featuring Manuel de Falla’s El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-cornered Hat), Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances, and Anna Clyne’s Dance Cello Concerto. From the fiery passion of Andalusian folk dances to the lively charm of Scottish reels and the lyrical intensity of Clyne’s modern masterpiece "Dance", this concert promises a vibrant celebration of music and movement.
For me, Falla’s music feels both familiar and personal. Growing up in northern Spain, flamenco was ever-present through television and holidays, shaping my deep connection to this music. "Falla polishes folk music like a diamond, refining its essence while keeping its raw energy intact." Falla doesn’t simply orchestrate folk music—he elevates it, refining its essence while keeping its raw energy intact. The way he integrates flamenco rhythms, cante jondo-style melodies, and traditional dance forms within a sophisticated orchestral framework is masterful. Don’t miss this unforgettable journey through sound and dance!
The concert is at Victoria Hall, at 7.30pm on Saturday 22 March (part of the Classical Sheffield festival weekend). Tickets and further information available here.
