About the event

The highs and lows of life and death will be explored in this programme of two absolute classics, and one newly commissioned work, in the second concert with our new Musical Director, Jon Malaxetxebarria.

Chris Noble is a Sheffield-based composer (and occasional guest player with Hallam Sinfonia); his new work has been conceived to complement the other two works in this programme. Strauss's magnificent "Death and Transfiguration" is a tone poem depicting the death of an artist, and subsequent transfiguration; this is often thought of as one of his best works. Tchaikovsky's final symphony, the "Pathetique", is a true masterpiece of the genre, with joyful and playful inner movements being surrounded by majestic and angst-ridden outer movements.
